You're kidding?! I'm HUGE!!!!

So you hear the stories, urban legends etc. about kids dying in home appliances. I could never imagine how it could be possible. Usually dryer is missing from European households since, we all can hang our clothes, it uses up some space, it takes longer time to dry but it doesn't use energy. But washing machines are there in many households. And most of us has a 3.5-4.5kg to 6kg big one. And it's always easy to fill them up regardless the size. The weekly laundry takes more than one load even if you pack the washing machine full. Like, when I changed the bedsheets my wife was always arguing with me, that even I fold them so they need less space in the washer, it's too much for the washing machine, and I should wash them in two loads because they're smelly. Well my nose it not that sophisticated after 20 years of allergy treatment, which comes really handy around smelly objects (like on the bus no. 7 in Budapest).

So after all this I couldn't imagine how kids could play hide and seek, and one of them ending up in the washer or dryer, and then someone switches on the machine and that leads to a serious accident... But now I understand. In the apartment where we used to live until August there was a combined washer-dryer (washer down, dryer up, combined together) in the unit. In the new place there was no such thing so we ended up buying our own; it's not an apartment complex, so there's no coin-laundry neither. We went to a Sears Outlet, and from $900 we got both the washer and dryer, accessories to hook up, delivered, and installed. In the shop they didn't seem huge, but they are indeed. I realized the first time I used them. A weekly laundry didn't fill up half of the belly of these beasts! The dryer accepts 2 loads from the washer. And they're super quite. We do have a laundry room, but even with the door open, I cannot her nor the washer and dryer.

The other crazy thing is that it is hard to find a washer that has a drum and not a pole in the middle torturing the clothes. The mix-dial based washers extinct in the 80's for me. Even my grandmas bought new automatic washers. But here people are still using them and it's quite popular even though their price compares to the modern ones... They're automatic, but for instance when it starts to rinse, you have to be there to pour the fabric softener in..

Halenda: the story how I became a Flour Tomi fan...

I'm not back at home, so I can't really tell how lame that is at my age to become a fan of Fluor Tomi. And if I presume that he shares his fan-base with SP then maybe I'm the oldest one... Anyhoo lame or not, I can't help it, so it's just better to admit it, now innit?!

It all started a year ago, with Partyarc. I had my bachelor's party last year. With friends we went down to Siófok (where else?!) the budget version of Ibiza in Central-Eastern-Europe. It was raining so the plan to lay on the beach in the afternoon was cancelled. Instead we were drinking a lot back in the apartment we rented and MTV Hungary was on. In every 10 minutes the song Partyarc was played. And you have to admit it's kinda catchy. It makes its way in your ears, and will never come out... (See all referenced videos below)

Then recently Mizu? came out ant took over the Hungarian music scene in a minute with a blast. Everyone remixed it, and even admitted or not they were listening to it (maybe even secretly). And today Halenda, which is again a mock of music and lyrics and still you can't get it out of your head... And that was the last drop for me, too.

Tomi is really a dividing person. You love him or hate him, but I think we all have to admit that he's a genius and he's a talented musician, producer and salesman. I bet he had lived here in the US he'd be an international superstar by now. His music gets in your head and you can never get it out... Everyone speaks about him, and he thrives and grows... I cannot really name any other Hungarian musician who could produce three songs in one year and all of them were a blast!

And I damn sure he's laughing at us all, like an evil genius who managed to take over the world. So give in and join me in enjoying his art, while you can!

F***n' Hungarians!

The picture below is from a blog posting funny pictures on a daily basis (here and here). The first link I just discovered today, and this the source of the picture below:

This is not really actual right now, but it gave me a good laugh this morning. And I need to mention, that Germans do the same:

6th Dec.: Small gifts from Santa (mostly sweets)
24th Dec evening: Gifts are coming from Baby Jesus

For some reason...

Spiders

I never really understood Garfield's hate towards spiders. And I'm also very superstitious and they say if you kill a spider it brings misfortune. Living in places before made of bricks or concrete I didn't really meet too many spiders, and our first place in the US was an upstairs apartment, so there were not too many spiders... After moving to a house, I realized that spiders are popping up everywhere here. And I don't want to kill any of them, but if it is larger then a half a centimeter (0.2 inches) I don't really fancy the idea to share my living space with them. So I usually capture them with a glass, and throw them out. But it's a lot of effort. Is there any spider-repellent I wonder?

Welcome to Wisteria Lane

This weekend was busy. We were moving. It took about 3-4 days to pack our stuff. I don't know how can you get so many things within just one year. We arrived last year with all together 6 suitcases, and now we used so many boxes and I had to turn 4 times with the 10' U-Haul truck I was renting... Even though we got rid of that ugly dresser and sofa set we had in the apartment.

The new place is lovely, it's a unit in a duplex. The street is a dead-end street and this house is right at the very end of the street. It comes with a garage, driveway, backyard, front-yard! The neighbors are just lovely. They introduced themselves as soon as they could get a hold of us, we were even invited to a grill-party that day! We showed up, to introduce ourselves, but didn't stay for long. Too many boxes to unpack... However the previous owner of the house who was living there for 24 years were at the party, and she came by before and told us how the house used to look like before it was renovated.

It was such a different experience I had in the apartment complex where we used to live!

Friday, we got the keys. In the evening we went to Ikea, bought a 4 seat sofa, dining set, a rag, a couple of smaller things for just only $899. Great deal indeed!

Saturday we moved over, I terminated Comcast on the old address, and went back to Ikea to buy myself a desk since I realized that I don't want to see the old one in the house. I managed to fit the 2m (78 6/8") long desk in my car (I cannot open the trunk through the back seats, stupid Dodge). In the evening I assembled the dining set, and the shelf part of my desk while my wife unpacked our kitchen. We were exhausted!

I woke up to the birds, instead of a building supplies factory... Much more pleasant!

Sunday I got up early, and finished the rest of the desk. We went to the old apartment to clean it up. People from Craigslist came to pick up the stuff we didn't want anymore. My favorite was the Indian lady, who came with an SUV to pick up a 3 piece sofa set and the drawer. Luckily she was not alone, and the white guy with him could get a trailer. So we got rid of all the stuff and finished cleaning up. In the afternoon our new sofa arrived, and we finished the assembling. We went to Home Depot, too, to buy a couple of things. They had a battery driller/screwdriver for $29.99. I bought it. If only I did that before assembling all those things! Anyway I drilled the Internet stuff on the wall (router, switch, cable-modem) and we finished unpacking. The living room is ready and it's looking great! Sofa: jeans color, rag: bright red, TV and coffee table, desk, PC. All set!

This morning Sears delivered our washer and dryer, and I packed my clothes in the wardrobe. And with that we're 90% ready. The wardrobe space is smaller than in the previous apartment, so for the extra T-shirts and things we'll need something. Maybe a 1.5m wide Ikea PAX wardrobe next month... Credit card is empty ;)

I think we did excellent. But if we have to move again, it'll sure be a nightmare. We have a huge garage now. With shelves. Lots of shelves... Where you just dump stuff and forget about them... Dangerous :)

And now our typical middle-class American life shall begin!
